Your 9-Night Adventure: A Day-by-Day Discovery
Day 1: Arrival and the Lush Paradise of Lake Manyara
Lush landscape of Lake Manyara National Park

Your African epic begins the moment you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). You’ll be warmly greeted by our representative and introduced to your expert driver-guide, who will be your companion for the safari portion of your journey. Settle into your private, comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle and begin the scenic drive towards Lake Manyara. The transition from the bustling airport to the serene landscapes of the Great Rift Valley is a spectacle in itself. You’ll pass through local villages, coffee plantations, and rolling hills, getting your first true taste of Tanzanian life.

Your destination is the magnificent Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge, perched on the rim of the Great Rift Valley with breathtaking views over Lake Manyara below.

After checking into your luxurious Standard Room, you’ll have time to freshen up and perhaps take a dip in the infinity pool that seems to spill into the horizon. Lake Manyara National Park is a compact yet diverse sanctuary, famed for its vast, shallow alkaline lake that attracts thousands of flamingos, and its dense woodlands that are home to the legendary, albeit elusive, tree-climbing lions. Your stay here is on a full-board basis, starting with a delectable dinner featuring both international and local flavours.

Lodge Highlight: Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge

This lodge offers unparalleled luxury and panoramic views. Each room is elegantly appointed, providing a sanctuary of comfort after a day of travel. The service is impeccable, ensuring your first night in Tanzania is one of relaxation and anticipation for the adventures to come.

Days 2 & 3: The Endless Plains of the Serengeti
A herd of wildebeest on the plains of the Serengeti

After a hearty breakfast overlooking the valley, you’ll journey northwest towards the world’s most famous national park: the Serengeti. The name itself, derived from the Maasai word ‘Siringet’, means ‘endless plains’, and you’ll soon understand why. The landscape unfurls into a seemingly infinite expanse of grasslands, dotted with acacia trees and rocky outcrops known as kopjes. This is the Africa of your dreams, a stage for one of the planet’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

Your home for the next two nights is the Ole Serai Luxury Camp in the heart of the Seronera region, an area renowned for its abundant predator populations. Your Standard Tent is anything but standard; it’s a canvas palace with an en-suite bathroom, plush bedding, and a private veranda where you can watch the world go by. Staying in a tented camp is an immersive experience, connecting you to the wilderness while providing all the comforts of a luxury hotel. The sounds of the African night—the distant roar of a lion, the whoop of a hyena—will be your lullaby.

These two days are dedicated to exploration. You’ll embark on morning and afternoon game drives in your exclusive 4×4 vehicle. Your guide’s expert eyes will seek out the ‘Big Five’—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhino. But the Serengeti’s wonders don’t stop there. You’ll encounter vast herds of wildebeest and zebra, graceful giraffes, speedy cheetahs, and a dazzling array of birdlife. Each game drive is a unique adventure, with unpredictable and thrilling sightings at every turn. In the evenings, you’ll return to camp to share stories around the campfire, enjoying sundowner drinks before a gourmet dinner under a canopy of stars.

Camp Highlight: Ole Serai Luxury Camp

This camp offers an authentic safari experience without compromising on luxury. The staff are attentive, the food is exceptional, and the location is prime for wildlife viewing year-round. It’s the perfect base for your Serengeti exploration.

Days 4 & 5: The Natural Wonder of Ngorongoro Crater
Panoramic view of the Ngorongoro Crater floor

Leaving the Serengeti behind, your journey continues to another of Tanzania’s crown jewels, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. En route, you may have the option to visit Olduvai Gorge, a site of immense paleoanthropological importance where the Leakey family discovered some of the earliest human fossils. Upon arrival at the crater rim, your first glimpse into the caldera below is a moment that will stay with you forever.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, a 2,000-foot-deep, 100-square-mile natural amphitheater that hosts a staggering density of wildlife.

You’ll check into the Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge, a colonial-style lodge set on a picturesque hill with spectacular views of the crater highlands. After settling in, the main event awaits. You will descend the steep crater walls to the floor for an extensive game drive.

This self-contained ecosystem is like a real-life Noah’s Ark. Here, you have one of the best chances of spotting the full Big Five in a single day, including large elephant bulls with impressive tusks and the elusive black rhino. The crater floor is a mosaic of habitats, including grassland, swamp, and forest, supporting a population of approximately 25,000 large animals. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch by a hippo pool, surrounded by the sights and sounds of this incredible natural wonder.

You will spend two nights at the lodge, allowing for a full day of crater exploration and a day to relax and enjoy the lodge’s luxurious facilities, such as the swimming pool and spa, or perhaps take a guided walk in the lush gardens. The evenings are for enjoying the cool mountain air and reflecting on the incredible wildlife encounters of the day.

Lodge Highlight: Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge

With its classic architecture, sprawling gardens, and stunning location, this lodge provides a tranquil and luxurious retreat. The service is top-tier, and the views are simply unmatched.

Days 6 to 9: Coastal Bliss in Zanzibar
A luxurious swim-up villa in Zanzibar

After a final safari breakfast, you’ll be driven to Arusha Airport (ARK) for your domestic flight via Precision Air to the spice island of Zanzibar. The short flight offers a dramatic change of scenery, swapping the golden savannahs for the glittering turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Upon arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), you’ll be met and transferred to the serene northeast coast, a region known for its idyllic beaches and laid-back atmosphere.

Your sanctuary for the next four nights is Matemwe Attitude, where you’ll be staying in an exquisite Swim-up Villa on an all-inclusive basis. This is the ultimate relaxation retreat. Your villa offers direct access to a swimming pool from your private terrace, allowing you to slip into the cool water whenever you please. The resort’s philosophy is centered around unwinding and embracing the ‘pole pole’ (slowly, slowly) pace of island life. Your all-inclusive package covers all meals, drinks, and a selection of activities, meaning you can leave your wallet and your worries behind.

Spend your days as you wish. Lounge by the pool, stroll along the powder-soft sands of Matemwe beach, or gaze out at the Mnemba Atoll, a world-class diving and snorkeling site. The tides dictate the rhythm of the day here, revealing fascinating marine life in the rock pools at low tide.

You can indulge in spa treatments, try your hand at watersports, or simply read a book in a hammock. For those with a taste for culture, we can arrange excursions to historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or a tour of a local spice farm to discover why Zanzibar is known as the ‘Spice Island’. These four nights are your time to decompress, absorb the magic of your safari, and soak in the tropical paradise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ABTA and ATOL protection?

This is a crucial question for any traveller. ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) protects you when you book a package holiday that includes flights. If the travel company goes out of business, ATOL ensures you are not stranded abroad and won’t lose your money. ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) provides protection for non-flight-based holidays, such as cruises or rail holidays. As we provide flight-inclusive packages, we offer both, giving you the most comprehensive financial protection available.

What is the best time of year to travel to Tanzania?

Tanzania is a fantastic year-round destination, but the best time depends on what you want to see. The dry season, from late June to October, is peak season for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. The travel period for this offer, March, is at the end of the ‘short rains’ and beginning of the ‘long rains’. It’s a ‘green season’ with lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and many newborn animals. It’s a beautiful time to visit.

Are visas required for UK citizens?

Yes, British passport holders require a visa to enter Tanzania. This can typically be obtained online in advance through the official Tanzanian immigration website or, in some cases, upon arrival. We strongly recommend applying for an e-visa beforehand to ensure a smooth entry process. We can provide guidance on this.

What vaccinations are recommended?

We advise consulting your GP or a travel clinic at least 8 weeks before your departure. They can provide the most up-to-date advice on recommended vaccinations, which may include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Anti-malaria medication is also strongly recommended for all safari areas and Zanzibar.

What does ‘full board’ and ‘all-inclusive’ mean?

Full Board (during your safari) includes your accommodation and three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Drinks are usually extra. All-Inclusive (in Zanzibar) includes your accommodation, all meals, and a wide range of locally branded alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Specific inclusions can vary by resort, but it offers a more carefree experience.

What is AMREF Flying Doctors?

AMREF Flying Doctors is a leading air ambulance service in East Africa. Your included membership provides a crucial safety net. In the unlikely event of a serious medical emergency in a remote safari location, they will provide air evacuation to a high-quality hospital in Nairobi, ensuring you get the best possible care quickly. It’s peace of mind we insist on for our clients.

How strenuous are the game drives?

Game drives are not physically strenuous as you are seated in the vehicle for the duration. However, days can be long, starting early for the best wildlife viewing. The roads within the parks can be bumpy and dusty, which is all part of the authentic safari experience! The vehicles are comfortable and designed for these conditions, but it’s something to be aware of.

Can this itinerary be customized?

Absolutely! This itinerary is a suggestion based on what we know creates a fantastic trip. However, our specialty is bespoke travel. If you want to stay longer, upgrade a lodge, add a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti, or include a cultural tour, just let us know. We will tailor the perfect journey just for you.
